Green Buildings

The persistent growth in population and the steady rise in pollution has largely affected the health and welfare of the inhabitants of the country. Scientists and engineers are looking everywhere for smarter ways to eradicate the adverse effects to the environment and thus in turn provide a sustainable better future for the people residing in the country. Newer ways and technologies have been incorporated largely among all the sectors to ensure a more secure future. Among the latest innovations, Green buildings is an advanced technique that has shown greener which means better future.

Green buildings or green construction refers to both a structure and the process of using that are environmentally responsible and resource efficient throughout the building’s life cycle. Life cycle defines the every step including of siting and design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and the end demolition. Green building designs aims to find a proper balance between home building and sustainability of the environment. In order to attain this and make a reality it requires close cooperation of the design team, the architects, the engineers and the client at all stages. These designs expands and complements the classical design concerns like economy, safety, durability and comfort.

Organizations like LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) serves as the rating systems for Design, Construction, Operation and Maintenance of the green buildings. Whereas BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) confirms the sustainability of buildings.

New technologies are being constantly being developed to complement in creating greener Structures. Green Buildings holds the prime objective to reduce the overall impact of the built environment.

In order to successfully complete these green structures the structural engineers are incorporating the latest of techniques and the building materials that will offer the society with buildings that willingly will increase the stability of the environment and in the same time will not compromise on the strength sector.

On the aesthetic side, green buildings deals with the philosophy of designing a building that is in harmony with natural features and resources surrounding the site.

The most talked about and criticized issue related to construction of green buildings is the price. Cost management is an issue that matters to everyone and this construction happens to add up the cost by (2-3) %, but on the other hand yields 10 times over time. Some of the studies have shown that green buildings have yielded $54 to $70 per square foot back on investment.

Although newer and latest techniques are regularly being developed to complement the current practices in creating greener structures, the main objective remains same that is reduce the overall impact of the built environment on the health and welfare of the human and environment, some of the ways of achieving these are:

  • Efficient usage of water, energy and other resources.
  • Reducing waste pollution and environmental degradation.
  • Usage of recycle products.
  • Protecting occupant health and improve employee productivity.

The people are demanding for an evolution in a better way and proper execution of the construction will help people meet their demands.
