Prefab Structures

Homes have always played an important part in everyone’s life. Every individual dream to own a house at some part of their life and there have been newer ways that are coming up in the construction of the houses. The medieval ages have witnessed houses built out of wood and the transformation carried on to constructing the building out of concrete. The plain land buildings in a generalized way have adapted to the construction based on concrete and cement, whereas parts of the rocky terrains still opt for houses and buildings made of woods. In this race between the concrete structures and the woody ones, prefabricated buildings are the latest addition.

A prefab or prefabricated structure is a building that is constructed and manufactured using prefabrication. The total unit consists of factory made structures and components that are carried or transported on the particular site and assembling is done over there. The completion of the building is hence done on site after the units are transported and assembled. It was back in 1837 when the idea of the first prefab building came into the mind of the London-based carpenter “Henry manning”, who built the components of the house and then it was shipped and assembled by the British emigrants.

Architects and engineers are incorporating latest of the structural designs in the prefabricated buildings of the new age. The latest designs and techniques increase the durability of the structures, and in no way should be compared to mobile homes. There are a lot of advantages of prefab structures, the prime being the time management ability. Prefab buildings are made in parts and assembled on site, thus it literally takes the least of time to complete and in no time one can have the complete structure. Other plus points include the customization, based on climate and location one can customize and have the desired building. It also allows the clients to have the desired number of rooms and other features such as solar panels on the roof. Though the use of prefab structures is expanding on a large scale in many countries across the globe, but India still opts for the conventional ways of construction. Earthquake prone areas like Gujarat and Nature have some prefab structures in the vicinity. Use of prefab structures has benefited the people in a lot of ways.

  • It saves time,cost,material and manpower/li>
  • Shuttering and also scaffolding is always necessary
  • Installation can be done immediately
  • Good quality components, produced at close supervision
  • Correct dimension and shape is well maintained
  • Possibility of reuse and alterations

Prefabricated structures involve a lot of intelligent engineering in order to ensure the overall safety of the people. Pre-stressing techniques are involved on a large scale in the manufacturing of the prefab structures. Pre-stress involves techniques like pre-tension and post-tension ways of producing the concrete. These ways increase the overall strength of the structures and pillars and thus the total construction is done in a faster way without compromising on the quality and safety.
